Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen, Wassalatu wassalamu ala asrafil Anbiyai wal Mursalin Sayyidina Muhammadin Wa Ala Alihi Wa ashabihi Ajmain.

Sanglit iban pudji pa katan nakasaksi’ hakatunggal sin Tuhan daing ha nakauna sambil pa adlaw yan.

Lingkat sin Piyapanjari

In bangsa manusiya’ amuna in piyapanjari hipu’ sin Allah SWT sin katan kalangkapan lahil iban batin. "Iban in Allah nagkahandak hadja magig daing kaymu sin kalummian [dusa], wahai kamu manga tau laum bay, iban sussihun kamu salanu’lanu’. [Al-Ahzab:33]

Hangkan na in kabuhi’ ha dunya subay tuud papagbuluk binasahun maglugtu’ labi awla daing ha laum ha supaya madawhat niya in ka Islam bukun hadja ha ngan iban tuput ha pangadji’, sagawa Islam daing ha lahil pa batin, iban in pangadji’ nauki’ niya lumangkap ha baran bukun hadja ha dila’ iban ha katas. Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen. Wassalatu wassalamu ala Rasulillahil Karim.

In bangsa manusiya’ amuna in piyapanjari sin Allah SWT nagdara sin sahalga’-halga’ iban sataas-taas darajat daing ha katan piyapanjari. Isukan sila sin Allah SWT sin salingkat-lingkat kamulliyaan amun sabab kiyatungkilang daing ha katan piyapanjari. Laung sin Allah SWT ha laum sin Qur’an, “Sabunnal tuud piyapanjari namu’ in manusiya’ ha laum dagbus amun sarayaw-rayaw” [Qur’an 95:04]. In kamuliyyaan ini bang madawhat sin hambuuk siyulagan manusiya’ matarbilang siya daing ha manga likusan sin manga kanabihan, kawalihan iban sin manga salihin. Lamentable plight of the Illegal

Here is the common opinion that confined in the Tausug psyche regarding the lamentable fate they have for decades since they were become citizens of their forefather’s enemy.

Being a Tausug who personally facing the reality behind the saddest plights of the Tausug living in the Philippines and Malaysia, I felt like to share this dot of opinion; who knows this could be of help to locate brilliant ideas out there. The feeling that I have is also presence in every hearts of the Tausug particularly them who were sacrificing to work in abroad enable to bring a short-range of happiness to their ill-fated families back home.

I once asked a Tausug in Sabah if what motivated him to migrate to Malaysia despite of the promise suffering he can possibly experience if by chance he got caught by the Malaysian authority for having no legal document. “He said, in Malaysia we can only experience jail and if fail to produce any legal papers will be whipped on the buttock with rattan; in the Philippines much worst. As people have a dignity we cannot keep on tolerating the behaviour of our corrupt leaders particularly in Sulu to fool us and demeaning our value as a Tausug who devotedly practicing Islam. If we still have a choice left, to go somewhere just to evade this human catastrophe could be considered as good decision by now. If not, our fate will be the same as them who fought for quite a long time with the Philippine government. I do not like to involve myself with this otiose war. What we need is money not bullet. That’s why I rather work in the construction site in Malaysia, even every salary we were paying certain amounts to some irresponsible policemen as an exchange for our temporary liberty. I knew this practice is wrong but what options do we have if we want to survive in this country, he asked me?”

The short conversation we had with Mr. Arabani [not real name]was leaving me mutely for a while. I went home with heart full of gloominess. But I just let it skipped afterwards I know he was right unfortunately the Tausug were having no body to go to seek for help, except Allah. Most of their leaders in Sulu who were elected by the people under the Philippine government show no interest to save them from the malady they were facing. In contrary, their leaders were spent more money and time to buy beautiful bungalow outside Sulu and latest car or wheels which they can use to brag to their fellow leaders. These are just some of the attitudes of the Illegal Immigrants leaders’ in Sulu and in the Philippines. Suppose the Filipino leaders in Sulu could do something on their side to answer the expatriation problem in Malaysia. They can do it should settling the problem is the prime goal.

Evidently, the flock of undocumented Filipino presence in Sabah is the result of war done by the Philippines in Sulu. Now, even the Philippines had strategize economic assistant through the help of foreign donors like the USAID to the Tausug it can still be considered as futile, because the people of Sulu wanted to be free and exercise their own sovereignty. The political representatives of the Malacanang in Sulu could not satiate the people because the representatives themselves were the number one problem of the people. Now to whom the Tausug would run if all their leaders elected were not problem solver?

I believed there had been serious action being done bilaterally between Malaysia and the Philippines to solve illegal issues. But did it bore positive effect? Until what extend do the designed solution took effect?

Recently, the Illegal issue is buzzing in Malaysia. Some groups of Malaysian were even politicking this issue. All they wanted that their land is free of illegal. Everybody wants to live legally but to become a legal person living in this world is costly. Paper is very expensive and it had trammelled undocumented individuals to travel on earth surface – it’s a law. If only Allah send us to this world to do this valueless thing, where in the universe we can seek for freedom?

Anyway, illegal issue in Sabah need a serious yet sincere solution. On the Philippines side, fulfil your obligation as a “Protectorate” to the Tausug. While the Tausug still on the process of looking the best answer to their decades problems, on my opinion, try to put tight security in Taganak Island, Bongao, Jolo and other wharfs where the lansa heading to Sabah is departing and give a cheapest visa or working pass to the migrants entering Sabah. In Taganak alone there should have immigration officers assign to issue short visit visa or working pass cheaply. This could be done through collective collaboration.

On Malaysia side, since this country have enough concern to the plight of the oppress people like Palestine, why not do the same for the people of Sulu and other neighbouring countries who come to Malaysia mostly to help boom the country’s economy. Illegal issue, I think, should not be more politicize but try to work for the problem wisely and humanely. Malaysia is one of the successful nations recently; hopefully the government could find other solution rather than jailing and whipping the illegal. I hope, both governments will double their efforts to find the best panacea to the illegal immigrant issue affecting the people in Southeast Asia, Philippines, Malaysia and Sulu in particular.

Journey of the Poor

We were leaving the port of Zamboanga city heading to Bakungan Island nearby Sabah for our final journey witnessing the richness of Sulu Archipelago. The typical vehicle used to reach the tip of the archipelago is the “lansa” or wood vessel. The lansa trip has no specific date or schedule like the usual passenger vessels do. Tausug used lansa for barter and trading activities after human propeller did not anymore exist.

It has been known to the world that the cause of impoverishment experience by the Tausug vividly attributed to the failure of the Philippine government to bring drastic change after the Sultanate government surrendered by irresponsible individuals from Sulu to the Republic. Being just a “Protectorate” the Philippines cannot replace what the Darul Islam can give to the people regardless of religious affiliations. The interest of Republic is to enslave the people whereas the Darul Islam is to free people from the political bondage and economic thraldom.

The reflection of the Philippine governance can be seen in Sulu is tantamount to a mob state. Justice can only be done effectively in Luzon but not in Sulu and Mindanao. Sulu under the Philippines is a military state at the same time running a self-style-mafia-like governance. Public servant supposes to serve its constituents in accordance with the mandates and trust given to him by the people. In contrary most public servants in the context of Philippine politics were like a gang master who only knew to use his power to command in line with his desire and interest of the group. Any individuals would like to question the authority or protecting the right of the people some public servants would make gimmicks enable to stop those individuals. Constitution is only applicable to the weaker constituents but not to the elites. The ruling power is like a cancer continuously killing its subjects.

Back to the journey, while the Filipino society busy watching Corona impeachment on TV the Tagalog women from Manila were crossing Malaysia border for paper money. They were lowering down their dignity as human in the name of poverty. They sacrifice the value of self and followed the dictates of their lust. This group of Tagalog Christians perhaps have in mind even if they don’t travel to sell their flesh as far as Sabah; in Manila they were also doing the same to evade the daily necessities. According to some passengers, these beautiful young ladies from Luzon, will be working in the local pubs and will be paid in accordance with their service to some Chinese who loved Filipino Sexy Women. For God sake Human Trafficking as if does not exist!

Of course folks, we are all free to do whatever we want in life. But this situation is another impact of the openness of usury [Riba] system in the Philippines. It indirectly enslaved and direct people to do illegal things. That’s why Allah SWT declares War against RIBA. Now I see why Datu Shaykh Umar Ibrahim Vadillo said in one of his Video that Philippines is one of the darkest countries on earth after Philadelphia and Washington.

When we arrived in Bakungan Island a Tausug said to me “If you’d like to open a Souq [Free Market] here just inform me”, after I discussed to him the beauty of Darul Islam as panacea to the prevalent problems faced by the humanities. Bakungan Island is just 45 minutes to Sandakan via Speed boat. This island is where the last destination of all lansa off from any ports in Sulu Archipelago.

The answers are surely with us. Allah will be opening His mercy from heaven and earth should the Muslims of today truly implementing the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad – establishing Muamalat for the people.

Poverty is indeed a calamity with the absence of faith to Allah.

The unsolicited tears

The news flash about recent Cleopatra bombing incidents in Sulu published at www.suludarulislam.org is an indication that something has to be seriously done. Many people and group have come up with their respective solutions to this sort of problem but the perpetrators are still out there planning for their next move to be targeted. We cannot directly say the culprit was Abu Sayyaf, Jamaah Islamiyah and so on unless we have facts to prove. Now, the men in authority still finding hints that would give them a final say about the incident.

Many Tausug believes that bomb incidents in Sulu cannot be solely pinpointed to the separatist groups or individuals. As far as the context of Sulu is concern, there are some people out there who don’t like to see Sulu develop, free of war and other good things. Their interest might be to keep this region always in a state of disorderliness enable that their dirty plans would be succeeded.

Whoever the perpetrators of the latest incidents in Sulu, May Allah punishes you in this world and in the hereafter. You are not really a man of faith. And you are indeed a coward!

My sympathy is to the victims particularly to those who got killed in action.

This is the incident worthy of reflection. Allah will not change the plight of the Sulu people unless they will change it themselves. All of us must seek the help of Allah to change the situation that we have now!

All of the problems faced by the Tausug will surely come to an end. But how, when and what to do?

The answers are in your minds! You are all brilliant Tausug. But you didn’t take yet the right medicine.

Begging for Tranquil

We were passed by the town of Zamboanga city while finding the best Tausug restaurant making delicious native coffee and enjoy seeing the crowd of people walking busily with their own affairs. Along the way we did encounter some indigent persons in the city begging for money – most of them samal – for survival. This city has plenty of mendicants. To my observation this practice would be difficult to address by the Philippine government firstly because the begging practice have become the newly culture of some Samal. Secondly, the Philippine government according to my narrow interpretation of the situation have been for decades exposing the torment of capitalism and usury to its constituents. Anyone who adopted the system will surely be submerged into the darkness. Those individuals who can’t adapt with the system will be looking for easier panacea to the pain they experience everyday – begging and other ignominious act.

Samal is a tribe in Sulu Archipelago illustrious for pearl diving and other sea activities. They were in this Island country before the Muslim missionary arrived to preach Islam to the Tausug. According to some theory Samal were the one who accompanied Muslim missionaries and propelled the banca from Johor to Sulu Archipelago. Today, this tribe are everywhere in any parts of Likusantara living according to their needs and choices.

After sipping the brewed coffee in a city-class Tausug restaurant we went to National Museum of Zamboanga City taking a cyclorama of historical and cultural remnants left in the city. Sad to say, the museum had been rearranged to focus on the colonialist remnants rather than the natives of Zamboanga City and Sulu Archipelago – the Tausug. Perhaps, the in-charges of the museum regarded the Tausug as the troublemaker which cause many colonizers suffered in their hands. Or they might afraid to promote the native is tantamount to resurrect the historical and ancestral rights of the Muslims?

Fort Pilar is one of the Spanish garrisons survived up to this day. This huge building marked the Spanish leftover in the Island country of the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam. The building of garrison was the colonizers policy enable to be saved from natives’ attacked. This garrison according to the natives had been attacked many times by the Tausug courageous warriors such as Panglima Ammad et al and other Muslim fighters from the region. The spirit of the killed Spaniards can still be seen through third eye according to Sharif Salman roaming around the fort.

As the clock ticked 5:00 PM the guard of the Fort Pilar signalling us time for closing. We hurriedly went out the fort. Suddenly, Sharif Salman had received a text from his fellow Naqshabandi of the Sufi Path that they have a weekly Jikir to be conducted in a selected mosque in the city on that evening. For Allah sake, we headed to that Mosque and joined the Naqshabandi way of doing Jikir.

I was in closed contact with Allah as the Jikir started. And listening to every recitation uttered by the amir, Sharif Khalid Ismael. It was a moment of happiness after been busy picturing Tausug foods in previous days. That was a moment of immersion with Allah.

Sufi practice had been with the Tausug since inception. This is the way that cemented the Tausug full reliance to Allah. It is the tool which softens the heart of every kind Tausug. I do hope this religious activity will last long in Zamboanga city.

Begging for tranquil can only be answered if we direct it to Allah. Them who were in deep connection with Allah do not beg anything other than Him. They were implementing Allah’s commands in their lives and society by eliminating Riba [usury] and other unlawful. They use the Dinar and Dirham currency to spread the Muamalah among humankind and establishing Zakat to address the outcry of the poor.

One day when the light of Shariah currency touched the land of Sulu the darkness will be gradually vanished insya’Allah. Regardless of faith, everyone will be enjoyed.

Ya Allah purify this society from RIBA!

ROADSIDE WEEKLY MARKET

On my third day exploring Tausug food in Sulu Darul Islam we took our chances to visit back the Roadside Weekly Market found in Banuwa Caragasan, Zamboanga City. This place is known to most Tausug as a spot where families, lovers and etc spend their weekend enjoying the cleanest sea water and the breeze from the Sulu Sea.

The crowds of people in the market and aplenty of Tausug foods sold didn’t put my finger and eyes into rest to look for remaining food we failed to buy previous days. We go directly to find the intact “Tihi’-Tihi’” [Sea Urchin] in a Samal stalls. Unfortunately, only the Tihi’-Tihi’ roe which was available sold along with some sea vegetables and other sea foods. However, the absence of Tihi’-Tihi’ didn’t bother us at all for the presence of some Tausug foods such as Punjung, Sindul, Biyaki’, Iyaman Batung, and other yummy delicacies were really relieving.

On this market we also found large sized Pugut and Kaytan. These fishes are ideal for Siyagul recipe. Though Dautdutan was also available, I had chosen the latter for safety purposes. The fish Dautdutan, in fairness, is also delicious but it needs an expert to remove small particles on its stomach containing dangerous poison.

I thanked Allah for giving me the opportunity to roam around and answering all the necessities for this project. Hopefully, before I left this place I could find Tihi’-Tihi’ for the Uku’-Uku’ recipe.

Sulu Archipelago is indeed beautiful. The only problem here is the system. People here are in dire needs of Muamalah. May Allah bring the ‘amal of Ahlul Madina to all markets in this island country.

PICTURING SULU THROUGH ITS FOOD

Last year I had a conversation with Brother Julfekar Ahmad to take all the pictures of the Tausug Food. We had planned to take it all during the plan showcase of all Tausug delicacies unfortunately that wasn't materialized for certain reason. I’m sure the reason behind is that Allah had a planned for me to shoot all foods here in Zamboanga City, Sulu Darul Islam.

I thank Allah for sending me here. Honestly, I felt the difference between here and in Malaysia particularly on this project. I have discovered at least two new Tausug confectioneries here; the names will be putted down in our recipe book, TRADITIONAL TAUSUG FOOD THAT JULFEKAR LOVE TO COOK, insya’Allah.

My food journey started last week in Tipo-Tipo Basilan. Over there I experienced the typical way of Tausug to buy fresh fishes at the sea shore when the fishing boats unloaded all caught fishes. The fish was so cheap we managed to buy 3 fishes for just 200 pisos. The fishing boat was catching fishes just in front of my relative’s community. If only there was available pump boat we were surely went to the fishing boat to experience how they caught fishes through traditional way and of course to buy some fishes.

After Dawn prayer in that community, as I went off the mosque I saw a Tausug took his pail loaded with squids supposed he brought it to Lamitan. Fortunately, his luck was opened then when I bought some squid other people in the community followed. That was really a busiest and delicious morning for me. The squid in Buhelebong Sea is quite shorter than the squid found in other parts of Sulu Archipelago. I really enjoyed eating grilled and sautéed squid after more than ten years left this community.

When I left Basilan and went back to Zamboanga City, we roamed around some markets in the city which sell cheapest fish and other food stuffs. We reached as far as Recodo and passed by the Caragasan beach and bought Squid, Fish, Marang, Corn, Banana, Coconut and other cooked foods for our first shooting in the city. The vendors were mostly Buranun and Samal. These ethnics were known for this kind of business. Unluckily, we didn’t see any Sea urchin sold that day. The vendors advise us to come back on Sunday to buy that.

On the next morning, we went to famous Satti Restaurant in the city to buy Satti and Ta’mu. Satti is one of the Tausug food rare found in other parts of Likusantara. As we done, we went to golden bell not to buy appliances but to buy Tausug special delicacies such as the Tiyula’ Itum, Piyassak, Piyanggang manuk and others. The food is cheap yet delicious. If you are Tausug food lover don’t go anywhere to look for yummy taste.

As we enter the wet market, crowded of vendors and emptors filled the way. I noticed, Zamboanga wet market is one of the busiest markets in Sulu Archipelago. If only this market following the concept of Souq in Islam, surely many indigents would be saved from poverty. I had noticed a cassava vendor selling in this market for quite a long time until now she is still there doing the same.

I just wish someday people in this city will be accepting Sulu Dinar and Dirham and following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad so that their busyness in the market would not be put in vain. Real business can only be found in Muamalah. It is the way of the truthful and the antithesis of tax collectors and usurers.

This short journey will be finished in few days, InsyaAllah. Hopefully I could find all Tausug recipes while in the city.

The simplicity of life began here

I was in the nearby vicinity of the so-called place of the freedom fighters in Basilan - Al-Barkah municipality; a place where only few outsiders dare to visit. A bloody ground for the Filipino soldiers. A dwelling abode of the peaceful group who never longing anything in this world than the word freedom.

Banuwa Buhelebung is just few kilometres away from Al-Barka municipality. This place was one of the communities I dwelt in my earlier life. It was here where I learned the simplicity of life; where you directly witness the suffering of a simple people who only dreaming to bring more food to their kitchens.

From Zamboanga city to Isabela I boarded Anika ship for an hour. In a ship, I was indirectly welcome by the Yakan smiles and kind words and entertained by the melodious tapping of a Bajau coin diver on his self-invented drums.

It was rainy day in Isabela city when we arrived at the wharf. I headed directly to the bus terminal riding a tricycle for only 20 piso. I stopped nearby fully air-conditioned Coach of the Biel Company. Enable to experience this new development I boarded the coach and we managed to reached Lamitan for only an hour. I reached banuwa Buhelebung for 20 minutes riding a motorcycle for only 120 piso.

Before I proceed to the final destination, my cousin offered me a sindul, traditional sweet soup made of red mongo and sago. The sindul was delicious. After that my nephew brought me to Banuwa Dayuh to meet more relatives.

I was entertained by a warm welcome of my relatives. They ask me with typical questions before I told them of my purpose visiting them. As I took the Shariah currency from my pocket the topic shifted to ideological discussion. In reality, they do not have any ideas of Darul Islam and the dinar and dirham. What they had in mind is more on Philippines politics and appreciating the federal system exemplified by Malaysia.

I shifted the topic from politics to environmental issue and went off to the newly cemented bridge to enjoy the richness of Allah’s creation. The serene sky, the greenest mountain, and the cleanest seawater were there waiting for anyone to feel the truly freedom.

From that bridge Al-Barkah municipality is clearly seen. I hope this place will be economically develop soon. May Allah send me back to this place and give me more time to explore valuable things there.

Visit for a Kaja

Last two days I had visitors from Kuala Lumpur went to my house to look for additional information about Duwaa Kaja. I contacted these persons few months ago and as an impression I really salute this group for having the guts to feature this antiquated practice of the Buranun-Sharif of Sulu Darul Islam.

In the first place, once we talk about this culture many would come to think that it is a practice of the tribe “Tausug”. But that reflex idea stands unaccepted once we begin to throw a question. If the Tausug is really a tribe of Sulu [Jolo] what is the meaning of ethnic Buranun then? In fact, Buranun and Sharif are the ethnics in Sulu who do the pagduwaa Kaja. Hence, enable to clear some confusion Buranun and Sharif [Arab] ethnics have to be highlighted as the withstanders and doers of this adat. It is misunderstood by some that it is the Tausug tribe who practice the Kaja because the people of Sulu used to call themselves as Tausug when asked about their identity. But the reality if someone says ‘I’m a Tausug, it means he is referring to his Identity as people living in Sulu not as his tribe. It is just the same if you are from Malaysia the Tausug will call you “Tau Malaysia". But Malaysia doesn’t represent your ethnic affiliation only a place where you belong.

The visitors came to my house were composed of Buranun-Sharif from Tapul, Siasi, Parang of Sulu Darul Islam and Kedah of Malaysia. The Malay brother is also an Ahlul Bayt belongs to Wan from Kedah. He said, their family is a descendant of Daeng who arrived to Kedah from Indonesia in the past.

Brother Wan Mukhriz is a professional cameraman who works with National TV of Malaysia. Currently, he is finishing their short movie entitled “ISM”.

He attracted with project duwaa Kaja through the inspiration of his partner Julia, a Buranun-Sharif, who are still studying in ASWARA Kuala Lumpur. This cultured young woman did finish her thesis on Kaja few years back and now she is collaborating with the cameraman to realize this project.

A place where to do Duwaa Kaja

Why do most Tausug do not anymore practicing duwaa Kaja, asked Wan Mukhriz? Is it because they have no adequate knowledge about it or what?

Some modern Buranun and Sharif today were not anymore practicing this adat for some reasons: firstly, they were being lured to puritanical thought through the sermons of Najdis propagators that to practice this adat would be committing a biggest sin “Polytheism”. According to them to beseech other than Allah would be creating partner to Him. Secondly, based from the first reason there are only few from the withstanders of Duwaa Kaja to defend it academically based from the consensus of the Ahlu Sunna scholars which emanated from the parameters of Islam – Qur’an and Hadith. Hence, adequate information about Kaja is lacking.

Before I came here, said Wan Mukhriz, I had consulted IKIM [Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia] for the status of the duwaa Kaja in Islam. They answered me to go on, he added.

Pagduwaa Kaja categorically fall on the concept of Tawassul and Istigatha. These practices had been unanimously agreed by most Sunni scholars in the past and at present. But today, even the practice had been approved by majority of the scholars to some it is not. Rather, most of the time even the scholars who visited the graves would be labelled grave worshippers by some narrowed individuals.

If Allah permits the Pagduwaa Kaja will be broadcasted internationally, through the guidance of FINAS Malaysia.

Marang Season

Yesterday I went off to the small market in our community to buy food exclusively for lunch. At that time there were two tropical fruits sold, Durian and Marang. I went to the stall and tried to choose which Marang contains plenty of good flesh. After the Asar prayer I bought one Marang and together we ate with my half lemon. Honestly, one piece could not satiate our longing for it. Today after launch I bought again to really feel the toothsomeness of this seasonal fruit.

Marang is called in Malay as Buah Terap. It is a tropical fruit that has its own singularity. Perhaps this fruit grow only in Likusantara [Southeast Asia] area.

I remember when I was in Zamboanga City I once met a Jewish-American who was a visitor of our company. That time was fruit season and that fellow had able to eat Marang we found in a renowned hotel in town. “This is a strange fruit but it’s delicious”, he said. In America, according to him, I didn’t see this sort of fruit in the market.

When I was in Basilan I remember my grandmother brought us 4 pieces of Marang from the market for just 20 pisos. A bunch of four pieces of marang is called a ganta or gantang. If you have a tied of dried fish to be brought to the market you could exchange it with a gantang of Marang.

Marang was also used by the Tausug to name their community. In Indanan, Sulu there is a place called Marang. This place had been bombarded by the Philippine Military during hari raya edil fitri 2009.

The unripe Marang is used to cook by the Tausug with coconut milk with match dried fish. This cuisine named Giyataan Marang. And the Marang seed would be roasted and pounded later after it exposes in the sun for a day. If you happen to eat marang try not to throw the marang seeds for it can give you another yummy taste.

The Sermon

I was in Buansa, Indanan, Sulu Darul Islam during hari raya eidil fitri and eidil adha 2010. Culturally, I really had felt the ambience of being in a Tausug homeland when the hatib [Sermon reader] delivered melodic Eid’s sermon taken from purely Arabic language note. The note believed to be archaic used to read by various hatib when the Sultanate government still lively extant. Currently, only in some parts of Sulu Darul Islam where this practice adopted particularly to them who were still valuing the noesis shared by sufi masters in this island country.

There are various reasons why the Tausug clings to this mode of conveying message during Friday despite of some changes in religious practices of the Muslim. Below are my observations on the topic.

1. Firstly, the old folks in Sulu Darul Islam believed the sermon to be delivered must not be added with local language because it is how the previous generations of Muslims conveyed in the pulpits.

2. Secondly, during Friday and Eid prayer it is interdict for a hatib to attack, defame, and mock the congregation or individual. Thus if to read or convey message in purely Arabic nobody would be hurt, defamed or attacked.

3. Thirdly, the Tausug old folks explained the message of the Khutba to some Muslims right after the congregation prayer done.

The importance of sermon on Friday prayer to majority Sunni scholars regarded as the equivalent of two units [rakaat] of obligatory prayers. It is the reason during Friday the Zuhur prayer reduced into two units of prayer instead of four. Withal, the virtue can be gained from the sermon should at least gibe the rewards of two rakaat of Zuhur prayer.

According to Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani in his exposition on “The Language of the Friday Khutbah” on his commentary of the verse below that Friday khutba is part of the worship rather than the normal lecture. [pp. 10]

“O! believers,when there is a call for Salah on Friday, rush for the Dhikr of Allah and leave trade. (al-Jumu'ah:9)

The final and glorious Prophet Muhammad SAW (May Allah always uplift his status) and his rightly guided caliphs down to the four schools of thoughts did not deliver Friday sermon in any local languages even though most of the locals did not understand the kernel of the message (Read Mufti Usmani articles for further details).

On the above light we can arrive to a conclusion that the practice of the Tausug delivering khutba in purely Arabic is in conformity with Prophet Muhammad deed.

The conveyance of Islamic message during Friday and Eid into local languages emanated from the Rabitat al-Alam Al-Islami when they issued a fatwa in Ramadhan 1975 called “ Fatwas of Muslim World Unity” they said: “It is fard for women to perform the salât of Jum’a. The Khutba of Jum’a and ’Iyd can be delivered in the native language of every country.” [Sunnipath, pp. 77] The fatwa according to the author of sunni path is evidently a form of innovation.

The melodic chanting or Lugu of the verses is a traditional form of valuing and delivering the message of Islam artistically without offending anyone.

Thanks Allah the Tausug still carrying out this practice if not the remnants of Muslims in the past in this part of the world would be difficult to trace.

May Allah give me more time to listen to the melodic khutba of the Tausug.

The World in the 21st Century

Every day we read, hear and witness the unremitting problems of earth citizens appeared in multimedia. A person who easily gives up witnessing any form of atrocities would free themselves by doing any act which can make them forget what was happening in their surroundings. Some of them might come to think that the malady is a mere nature of human.

The known cause to the problem can be summed up as originated from greed, selfish, and ego. These low qualities are part of being a human. Even those pious persons are not free from having these traits prior they become Allah’s-conscious individuals.

The history of humankind throughout history was marked with the war of positive and negative traits of men. The first scenario happened on earth was during the time of Prophet Adam when Cain and Abel had quarrelled for their twin sisters. It was there the history of conflicts emanated.

Most of the time people argufy because of worldly things. We are even witnessing the shedding of blood anywhere and sacrificing the lives of innocence civilians enable just to defend the ego and interest of a group and a country.

The superpower nation is oppressing the weaker one by any means. Every country particularly those have linked to the superpower nation coined their religious ideology and labelling other countries that don’t adhere to them as heretics thus have no place in the belief they are embracing. They dare to destroy shrines of the pious and called the people visiting the grave as “grave worshippers” even the one who paid visits are pious and scholars. They masked themselves with faith but their attitudes are of the devil.

This is how the people of the 21^st century behaving. If yesterday, the ancestors of every defender in their land fought with interloper right at the shore and wharf of their country, today not anymore. Defenders are everywhere searching for survival while their enemies were in their countries to do what is beneficial to them. For in their country only poverty, corruption and injustices were left.

Yesteryears the ancestors of every freedom defender were free to move in their land, today not anymore, because the system invented by the superpower country were installed anywhere to easily control and identify the wave of people come and go out of the immigration desk. If you are entering a country without legal document you will be imprisoned or simply calling you “Illegal Immigrants” and you will receive at the end not paper diploma but marked of the hit of rattan on the buttock prior to be sent home.

If you tell them of your right, they won’t listen to you. If you fight for your right they will label you as terrorist. Because once they entertain you, their interest will be stopped.

This is indeed the era of mercilessness. Only few people in today’s world giving charity secretly. Most of the leaders today are giving charity not as to do their duty but to gain popularity out of it. In some countries for example if the government giving garbage truck for public use all of the leaders’ names will be printed on that truck, so that these leaders will be re-elected next election.

One day the world and all humankind will be perished. We can be witnessing in the hereafter how the cruel men be punished for their actions towards their fellow. Don't worry "The Oppressed".

Suppose the leaders of today’s world are not like this so that everyone can enjoy the freedom which Allah had given to them!

May Allah save us from the cruelty of this world and punishment in the hereafter.

Good option for your Identity

Some say don’t be over focusing with your race otherwise you’ll become ethnocentric. I say, if being ethnocentric would become a means for Tausug race not to be forever entombed, why shouldn't I?

I remember when I was in college, I was totally blind of my Identity – I’m sure not only me then. Honestly, I felt uneasy to be called Filipino and had little proud to be called Moro. However, my inner sight felt satisfied when Sulu ethnics found their long buried identity – the Tausug.

I’m sure many Filipino out there particularly those living in Sulu and Mindanao experience the same identity crisis. Luckily, these days the Sultanate of Sulu had been resurrected to make vague things clear. If only not, everyone who are clamouring for real identity would be left in sidewalk searching for the answer to their doubts.

Now we have two options to tick. Should you wish to apply your real identity mark your paper with TAUSUG citizenship if you are from Sulu Archipelago. But if you are happy of being a citizen of an Imagine nation and proud to be called Filipino, then stay where you are, because to decide for our nationality is a basic human right as stipulated in the UN charter.

However, if you are a Filipino don’t ever dream to leave in Sulu Darul Islam territory once the De facto government of the Sultanate is fully operating even your belief would say that you are a Tausug – unless you are a Filipino diplomats.

By now the Sulu people who are still acting deaf and dumb to this reality should reconsider their decision to choose their identity. We knew the survival of Filipino identity in Sulu nowadays it’s only because of money. Even a governor in ARMM said if SSDI have enough money to sustain its government he is more than willing to join and support the Sultanate government.

The Philippine government knew this reality. But they are still working very hard not to let Sulu pull up stakes from the Philippines. What is the guarantee? If Malacanang people would adhere loyally to the International law there’s no other way to choose than to let their strivers to withdraw from Sulu Darul Islam without any trouble that would bring discommode to the people of Sulu Darul Islam and the Philippines.

Identity is important. Without it you are just like a bird has no left feather to flap in the wide sky.

Think about it fellow Tausug!

Life is Always Wonderful

The Month of Muharram plays a significant role in Muslim history as well as to every Muslim who would reflect to its wisdom. No matter what kind of situation we are in on this temporal world, we should always say “Life is always wonderful anytime, any places and any situations. Life cannot be bought with money, fame, position and social status. It cannot also be downed with dysphoric feeling, poverty, and failure. That is why life is always wonderful for it birthed from the most wonderful creator.

From 2^nd December 2010 life within me didn’t change even I had visited the Sultanate of Sulu and some part of Mindanao many times. The beautiful and ugly things occurred before my eyes had just added to the innumerable memories of life. I’m only but a powerless pawn created just to appreciate the beaut of a Master’s creations.

This is what I treasured in the beauteous island of Bongao. It is there where I met the true love to which all turban wearers up to. This un-withered love taught me to appreciate Ibn Al-Arabi treatise and the work of previous saints which emanated from Allah’s beloved servant Sayyidina Muhammad [May Allah always raise his rank].

I became so reactive if any human disrespecting the discoveries of Allah’s friends. I found garbled to a man who claimed to be experts in Islam on the other hand devaluing the teachings of the earlier scholars and friends of Allah. To me a human who loved to mock the men of love are devoid of true love.

Love is a broad thing. The one who understand its meaning is a person who truly experienced it. Love is just like a seed will not be grown in just a day. It needs more time and sacrifices before we can reap its fruits.

We are all under the shadow of a Great love. He had given us the way enable to find the way back to Him. This way had been built within us. The secret of this path cannot be easily found if negligence to the 5 keys given to Sayyidina Muhammad [May Allah always raise his rank]. In every key the true love will be revealed by itself. All human and Jinn cannot dictate this love to appear because it is beyond their understanding. Only them who had entered the house of love who can truly guide men to its door. For in every way there’s always a house at the end of it.

Out of this love the Salsabilah fountain which used by Prophet Muhammad for ablution before he rose to heaven on Isra’ wal Mi’raj transformed into a great gift of our lives with my soul partner – Nurjameelah. A signal from above vibrating into my heart to answer my plea at the time I need a name for my baby who was still wrapped with eternal bliss inside the womb. That name I found in Surah Al-Insan of the Glorious Qur’an.

On this 2^nd day of December 2011, I thanked Allah for giving me these two beautiful kids – Sharif Aljanjawi and Sharifa Salsabilah. They are both wonderful to me. May Allah increase the love in their hearts – the love for their Country [Sultanate of Sulu], to their Bangsa [Tausug] and to their beloved Religion [Islam].

Thanks for everything Ya Allah especially for giving me a partner who understand me to the fullest. Save us from the wrath of this world and hereafter.

The Black Book: MAAS NUR MISUARI

At last, Nelson’s dream to publish his own book is now became a reality. This craft is another chef-d'oeuvre of a Tausug patriot, artist, poet and novelist.

The product of his personal experience begot ‘The Black Book’ entitled MAAS NUR MISUARI.

This book is a sort of novel that focuses on the struggle of the Father of Bangsa Moro, Prof. Dr. Nur Misuari. To which he said: ‎"As an afterthought, knowing that my knowledge about his (Maas Nur Misuari) vision and mission in fighting for the human rights and just cause of the people is already enough to share with others, I took this bold step to write a simple novel as a tribute and my appreciation to him for being the “prime mover of the Bangsamoro revolution” in our homeland of Mindanao and Sulu." Despite bulk of negative comments against Misuari, this book opens another positive angle where the People of Sulu and Mindanao must embrace to continue the dream which had been sowed in the past – Independence.

“...The conclusion and suggestion for the next plan of the struggle is the idea of shifting from Moro Nation to Tausug or Bangsa Sug. Sulu people have organized themselves to change citizenship from Filipino citizenship to Bangsa Sug or Tausug citizenship and nationality.
